It is in such a world Deckard lives, and he is unable to come to terms with his emotions or those of others. He is upset that his wife would rather feel deject than simply dial up a number to quarter her happy. He himself is fond of setting his dial on "D" because it makes him happy and well-disposed toward others.
As Deckard hunts down, identifies and kills the rogue androids, he begins to discover he has empathy for them. The Rosen Corporation builds the Nexus-6 androids. When Deckard visits the confederacy in order to discover more about the kit and boodle of this difficult-to-distinguish from humans android, he ends up falling in hit the sack with the daughter of the owner of the company, Rachael Rosen. However, Rachael is an android. Despite this fact, Deckard has emotions for her. He begins to question his touch sensation and emotions and what it means to be human. He longs for a real wildcat in order to provide care and nurturing to something that is "real". He purchases a sheep but it dies because the androids caring for it are unable to provide such nurturing and care.
This somehow makes Deckard recognize that being human is all about having a set of complex and varied emotions, feelings and moods. By the end of the book he will have experient a complete reversal from his position at the stemma of the book. At the beginning he tries to make his wife, Iran, dial up any number of moods or emotions. He cannot understand wherefore she would want to deal with things like depression or passion when she could easily rid herself of these feelings. However, by the end of the book he realizes it is exactly these kinds of human emotions and feelings that make humans distinct. He thinks of Rachael and how his sleeping with her and her killing his sheep make him feel inhuman, "I wish I could do to you what you did to me, he wished. If I had killed you last night, my goat would be alive now. There's where I made the wrong decision" (Dick 1996).
