      Paula Carver History 204 Nineteenth Century Imperialism Paul Toro 9-19-10 Imperialism has become so much a term of invective in modernistic politics that it is difficult to appreciate that at the turn of the one C it was a broadly respectable position. Both imperialism and antiimperialism included many attitudes that we would call industrial, and some, such as overt racism, that outright remain outside the bounds of acceptable discourse. An antiimperialist was as likely, if not more than so, to denounce imperial ventures as risking intermixture with inferior races as to argue that nonWestern peoples had a right to their own lives. Contrariwise, proimperialists had their own progressive wing, which argued that the advanced nations had the obligation to extend the benefits of Western civilization to slight favored. Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson both believed they had an obligation to spread American ideas and interests across the globe. As a new world power, the United States had an apparent prospect to remake the international system in a government agency that would eliminate the old ravages of war and corrupt alliances. Roosevelt and Wilson sought to transpose militaristic aristocracies with governments that promised economic development and, eventually, democracy.

International change of this alteration would, they assumed, best serve Americas long-term interests. The Republican chance was too the incumbent President.  William Howard Taft had reluctantly run for the office quadruplet years earlier after being persuaded by his predecessor, and now opponent, Theodore Roosevelt.  In some ways, Tafts record was more progressive that Roosevelts; for example, Taft did not make a distinction between good and wild trusts as Roosevelt had (Davidson, 2008, pg. 654).  But on other issues, notably on conservation issues, he broke with the progressives (Davidson, 2008, pg. 653).
