In “Harrison Bergeron”, Vonnegut shows us a grim future ground on a mutation of the ideal that entirely raft should be equal. In his future, all are equal. This equality comes from handicapping those who substantiate above the rest so that they are “average”. Harrison Bergeron is the idealize man; smart, handsome, graceful, and in federal prison for being all of those things. He breaks free of prison and attempts to share his individuality with every one(a). Vonnegut uses this hyperbole to show us that, while both are great and necessary, freedom and equality are not interchangeable and that it is the province of the people to make sure that its government is protecting it in the proper way.
In the search to make everyone equal, society is castrated. “ nix is stronger or quicker than anyone else”(724). The government has gone a physical contact too far, thinking that equality should go beyond unspoilt skin colour, sex, and sexual preference.
