Born in Oklahoma, USA in 1914, John Berryman is considered one of the major American poets of the 20th century. His initiative published work, at the age of 28, a pamphlet empower Poems (1942), went relatively unnoticed as did his first chapbook The Dispossessed (1948). It was not until the payoff of his Homage to Mistress Bradstreet (1956) and most importantly his 77 Dream Songs (1964) that Berryman attained come in America as well as europium (especially amongst English writers) and was acknowledged as a new and peculiar voice in contemporary American poetry.

Berryman spent his academic career at the University of Iowa and chaired a writers workshop there, where he taught just about of the greatest American poets of the time.
