The twenties were filled with xenophobia, fundamentalism and extreme conservatism and so to rank that this was an age of tolerance would be faulty. They were armed when arrested but there was not teeming evidence to pin the blame on them, however they were placid found guilty by the judge and sentenced to the electric chair.
