In the poem, the narrator is describing his ever growing fury towards his adversary, which Blake compares to the growth of a tree. Just as a tree needs sunlight to grow his anger needed a source of energy which happened to be his antagonist who he hates with a passion.

The anger grows uncontrollably, although he tries to trick his feelings and prepare to be happy but still his anger grows. It grows until it reaches the transfer where an apple sprouts up from the tree, which his adversary will eat and at last die from, thus giving the tree its poison in the dangerous fruit.
